Configure the Global Product Group feature

The Global Product Group (GPG) is a unified content solution that simplifies product categorization for organizations operating across multiple countries.

Overview

The Global Product Group (GPG) is a unified content solution that simplifies product categorization for organizations operating across multiple countries. Instead of mapping the same product to multiple geographically specific commodity codes (such as UNSPSC, Harmonized, Canada, Brazil, India GST, etc.), you can now use a single, comprehensive product hierarchy with one TR-defined commodity code per product category.
The Global Product Group can automatically determine the relevant Product Category by using existing commodity codes from other Product Groups, such as UNSPSC codes from the US Product Group or Harmonized codes from the Harmonized Group. Within the Global Product Group, you also have the option to activate the Product Category Attributes (PCA) feature for use with override functions in the US Product Group or INTL Product Group. Instructions for enabling the PCA feature can be found in Step 3 below. To learn more about Product Category Attributes, refer to the section called Understanding PCA Types below.
important
As of the 2026.01 release, the Global Product Group includes US retail commodities (product categories) only and has very limited geographic support including - in this initial phase - only the countries of Mexico and Canada. Be on the lookout for announcements throughout 2026 and beyond detailing expanded support for the Global Product Group.

Benefits

  • Eliminate duplicate mappings:
Assign one commodity code per product category instead of maintaining separate mappings for each region.
  • Streamlined product category management:
Reduce complexity when operating across multiple territories during cross-border trade.
  • Improved accuracy:
Ensure consistent product categorization and reporting across all regions.

Configuration steps

To enable and use the Global Product Group, complete the following configuration in your company:
Step 1: Navigate to Tax Logic & Company Admin
  1. Access your company configuration
  2. From the left navigation menu, select
    Tax Logic & Company Admin
Step 2: Configure Tax Logic Preferences
In the Tax Logic Preferences section, configure the following settings:
Override International Product Group:
  • Select
    Global
    from the dropdown menu.
  • Setting this value to Global overrides the default International Product Group used by Determination.
Override US Product Group:
  • Select
    Global
    from the dropdown menu.
  • Setting this value to Global overrides the default US Product Group used by Determination.
Step 3: Configure Company Admin Options
Scroll down to the Company Admin Options section, select
Add Option
and configure:
Enable Global Product Group Feature:
  • Set this company option to
    Yes
    .
  • Setting this value to Yes activates the Global Product Group for your company.
INTL PCA TYPE
  • Optionally select your preferred value from the dropdown.
  • The Product Group you select here determines which Product Category Attribute type the system will use for taxability when processing international transactions. For example, to pass a Harmonized commodity code instead of a GPG code in the tax calc request, choose Harmonized.
US PCA TYPE
  • Optionally select your preferred value from the dropdown.
  • The Product Group you select here determines which Product Category Attribute type the system will use for taxability when processing US transactions. For example, to pass a UNSPSC code instead of GPG in the tax calc request, choose UNSPSC.
Step 4: Save Your Configuration
After completing all settings, save your changes to activate the Global Product Group.

Understand PCA Types

PCA Type:
PCA (Product Category Attributes) Type determines which commodity code format the system uses when determining taxability for your transactions.
How it works:
With the Global Product Group feature, each product is assigned a single Global Product Group (GPG) code created by Thomson Reuters:
  • G-codes
    for goods (e.g., G-123)
  • S-codes
    for services (e.g., S-123)
Behind the scenes, each GPG code is linked to equivalent codes in various regional commodity code standards. For example, if GPG code G-123 represents "chicken eggs," it might be linked to:
  • 1001 in UNSPSC (United States)
  • 1233 in Brazil's commodity system
  • 1838 in Harmonized System codes
  • Additional codes for other regions
The PCA Type matter
When you select a PCA Type, you're telling the system which commodity code format to use for tax determination:
  • If you set US PCA TYPE = UNSPSC, the system will use UNSPSC codes (like 1001) to determine taxability for US transactions
  • If you set INTL PCA TYPE = Brazil, the system will use Brazilian commodity codes (like 1233) to determine taxability for international transactions
  • If you set US PCA TYPE = Global or INTL PCA TYPE = Global, the system will use the unified GPG codes directly

Common questions

Difference between "Override Product Group" and "PCA Type"
The Override Product Group settings tell the system to use the Global Product Group hierarchy. The PCA Type settings tell the system which commodity code format to use when determining taxability.
PCA Type and Single Product Mapping
Setting PCA Type to UNSPSC or Harmonized does not eliminate the benefit of single product mapping. Products still only need to be mapped once using the Global Product Group. The PCA Type simply controls which regional commodity code format the system uses behind the scenes for tax determination.
When to Use Global PCA Type
Setting PCA Type to "Global" provides the most streamlined experience. However, if your business has specific requirements to use regional commodity code standards (for reporting, compliance, or integration purposes), you can select the appropriate regional standard instead.
