Mask or unmask recipient TIN on Form 1099

The IRS instructions for Form 1099 allows you to mask the recipient Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) on paper copies given to recipients.
The recipient's TIN is truncated on all 2018 and later 1099 forms except Copy A (Federal) and Copy 1 (State Tax Department). Following IRS regulations, the first 5 digits of the 9-digit number has been replaced with Xs.
  1. Select
    File
    , then
    Layout Designer
    .
  2. Double-click the 1099 Forms folder, the folder for the appropriate year, then the form and copy you want to mask or remove the mask for.
  3. In the
    Recipient's identification number
    box, select whichever of the following variables is present:
    • TaxForm.1099Recipient.EINMaskedWithXsUptoLastFourDigits
    • TaxForm.1099Recipient.EIN
  4. Press
    Delete
    .
  5. From the Design Tools, select
    Variables
    .
  6. Select
    +
    to expand
    Tax Form
    and
    1099 Recipient
    .
  7. Double-click one of the following variables as needed:
    • To unmask the TIN, select the
      EIN
      variable
    • To mask the TIN, select the
      EIN - Masked with Asterisks up to Last Four Digits
      or
      EIN - Masked with Xs up to Last Four Digits
      variable.
    note
    This inserts the variable at the beginning of the form.
  8. Use cursor keys to move the variable to the
    Recipient's identification number
    box.
  9. Resize and reposition the variable as necessary.
