Transforming Tax Workflows: End-to-End Tax Workflow Automation with SafeSend and SurePrep

In today’s rapidly evolving tax landscape, as professionals face significant challenges in talent acquisition, regulatory complexity, and growing client expectations, firms are increasingly seeking comprehensive solutions that streamline and automate their workflows from start to finish. At Thomson Reuters, with our unique blend of talent, technology, proprietary tax content, and expertise, we’re uniquely positioned to deliver on this need. And, following our strategic acquisitions in recent years, including SurePrep in 2023, Materia in 2024, and SafeSend earlier this year in January, we have never been in better shape.
Our tax workflow products have always been founded on efficiency and accuracy, consistently striving to enhance the experience for both our customers and their clients. Adding solutions from SurePrep and SafeSend to our broad portfolio, we’ve expanded our focus to include ease of use and seamless integration from start to filing, and these solutions are transforming how tax professionals work.
The Power of Our Combined Portfolio
Our acquisition of SafeSend represents a transformational moment for Thomson Reuters and our customers. By bringing together SafeSend’s innovative technology with our existing solutions, including SurePrep TaxCaddy, 1040SCAN and SPbinder, we now offer unparalleled coverage across the entire tax workflow—from initial document gathering through final delivery to clients.
- SafeSend is known for its award-winning tax workflow automation solution for tax and accounting professionals from intake through to delivery. Tax return assembly and delivery takes 3-4 minutes, saving hours of manual tasks.
- SurePrep is the market-leader in the document gathering, data extraction and mapping workflow, with users reducing turnaround time by an average of 29% per return.
This end-to-end approach gives our customers a distinct advantage in the market: the ability to leverage truly end-to-end tax workflow automation from one partner that is designed to seamlessly connect every stage of the process.
Our Commitment to Innovation Across Solutions
Our number one goal is to deliver more value to our customers with integrated offerings, and with these acquisitions we are delivering more value each day. We are focused on increasing firm efficiency, saving time across the workflow, and improving the experience firms provide their clients with easy to use and simple applications. Our firm customers cover the spectrum in size and complexity and serve many different clients with a variety of needs. We aim to bring our customers the best solutions to meet their unique needs.
This requires ongoing innovation across the portfolio, and we’re committed to keeping up the close customer engagement, responsiveness and pace of delivery from the latest additions to Thomson Reuters.
For example, both SafeSend’s Gather AI feature and SurePrep TaxCaddy have strong customer followings with thousands of users, and we know some of our customers are curious about how these solutions relate to each other.
Supporting firms with saving significant time in the tax workflow, these solutions are designed to automate the intake process to facilitate the source document gathering process and initial client engagement. While they do have some overlapping functionalities in document and data gathering, they also offer distinct capabilities that address different firm needs and preferences.
Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach, we’re taking a more strategic path: investing in and enhancing both solutions to ensure we deliver best-in-class options for our diverse customer base. This dual strategy allows us to leverage the strengths of each platform while creating the most efficient, automated, and AI-driven experiences in the market.
Continuous Enhancement of TaxCaddy
Two years on from our acquisition of SurePrep, our commitment to SurePrep TaxCaddy remains stronger than ever, with recent enhancements focused on solving key customer pain points:
- Bulk Update Clients: This feature streamlines administrative tasks by enabling bulk updates to client records, freeing up valuable time for more strategic work.
- Bulk Migration: We’ve made it easier to transfer clients during mergers and acquisitions, ensuring smooth transitions between firm locations.
Looking ahead to the remainder of 2025, TaxCaddy users can expect:
- Smart Links 2.0: Automated retrieval of tax documents from financial institutions, eliminating manual uploads and expediting document availability.
- Auto-Categorization: TaxCaddy AI streamlines document organization by automatically recognizing and categorizing uploaded tax documents for more efficient processing.
Advancing SafeSend’s Gather AI
Simultaneously, we’re continuing to build on the recent launch of the Gather AI feature within the SafeSend One solution with its core capabilities and streamlined online client interface.
Key enhancements coming in 2025 include:
- Enhanced Dynamic Document Request Lists (DRL): We’re improving Gather by dynamically building DRLs based on customer questions and expanding the Auto-DRL generation library.
- Advanced Batch Capabilities: Bringing organizer schedule picker to batch deliveries and simplifying batch deliveries for entity engagements.
- Custom Questionnaire Improvements: Enabling duplication and editing of existing custom questionnaires, with downloadable custom questionnaires via API.
Our Vision for the Future
What makes Thomson Reuters truly unique is our blend of talent, expertise, content and technology – by executing on our acquisition playbook we are integrating these powerful gather and delivery solutions with our industry-leading tax engines, such as GoSystem Tax and UltraTax CS. This creates a comprehensive ecosystem that supports the entire tax workflow from end to end.
As we continue to evolve our solutions, we’re focused on bringing the best elements of both worlds together seamlessly. Our goal is to ensure that regardless of which applications your firm leverages, you’ll have access to best-in-class solutions that enable you to deliver exceptional experiences and service to your clients.
The future of tax workflow automation isn’t about choosing between disconnected point solutions. It’s about having a trusted partner who can provide integrated, AI-powered tools that work together across the entire tax process. At Thomson Reuters, we’re committed to being that partner—today and for years to come.
