A Sneak Peek into Building Fiduciary-Grade AI

Mike, Lead Backend Engineer

What’s it like building cutting-edge, trustworthy AI for tax and accounting professionals, where accuracy truly matters? We sat down with Mike, who is leading development on one of the core agentic assistants for CoCounsel, to hear what energizes him about the work, the technology, and the impact on customers.

What’s one word you would use to describe working at Thomson Reuters?

Working at Thomson Reuters in one word would be energizing. I really enjoy working on a large product like CoCounsel. There is so much momentum, and I get to collaborate with a fully cross-functional team to solve complex problems. Everyone is thinking about product improvements beyond their immediate area, and there are so many opportunities to learn from one another every day.

How do engineers here think about reliability when building AI‑powered products?

Because we’re building AI for professionals, trust, accuracy, and reliability are at the forefront of everything we do, both in our development processes and in the product’s functionality. Every code change needs to be well-tested and resilient. The insights generated by the product must be supported by evidence and citations grounded in our best-in-class research content.

Why is now an exciting time to work at Thomson Reuters?

Thomson Reuters is an incredibly exciting place to be right now. I’m currently leading development on one of our core agentic assistants, and the work is absolutely cutting-edge. We’re defining new patterns for agent execution using AWS, while also building scalable APIs and web user interfaces to bring those capabilities to life.

What makes Thomson Reuters a great place for innovation is that it’s truly at the forefront of embracing new tools and approaches. I have access to the best models, coding assistants, and learning resources through collaborations and connections to Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI. We’ve also recently enabled approaches that let us delegate work to autonomous agents in the cloud, which allows me to work on changes across the stack simultaneously.

Share with us what it’s like building AI for highly regulated industries.

There is a unique sense of purpose in building AI for highly regulated industries. Unlike in previous roles where the stakes were lower, accuracy is everything here. We aren’t just directing someone to a help desk article; we are providing answers that impact a person’s financial wellbeing. We take that responsibility seriously, investing deeply in the guardrails and evaluation processes needed to get it right.

Ultimately, our work is about the people we serve. My work helps tax and accounting professionals automate document analysis and access trusted guidance, enabling them to provide deeper support to their clients. If you’re looking for a place where you can own significant features and solve hard problems alongside a team that genuinely cares about doing great work, now is the perfect time to join us.

Thank you to Mike for sharing his insights on what it takes to build cutting-edge, fiduciary-grade AI that professionals can rely on. At Thomson Reuters, we’re looking for curious and committed innovators to help us continue shaping the future of professional work. Check out our open roles.
