Building the Future of Legal Content: A Conversation with a Senior Specialist Legal Editor

Rosida Carpagnano, Senior Specialist Legal Editor

The legal profession is experiencing unprecedented transformation as artificial intelligence reshapes how lawyers research, analyze, and deliver legal services. At Thomson Reuters, we’re not just observing this evolution, we’re shaping it. Our Practical Law team combines deep legal expertise with cutting-edge AI technology to create trusted, practical guidance that helps legal professionals navigate complex challenges with confidence.

We sat down with Rosida Carpagnano, Senior Specialist Legal Editor at Practical Law Global, to explore what it means to be at the forefront of this transformation. Based in Rome with over 20 years of private practice experience in M&A and commercial matters, Rosida joined Thomson Reuters in November 2019 and writes Practical Law Italian corporate law content while contributing to our Practical Law expansion into France and Germany. Her insights reveal why this is such an exciting time to join our Practical Law content team.

What drew you to Thomson Reuters and Practical Law?

What attracted me to Practical Law was a combination of factors: the opportunity to build a product that is both local in its relevance and global in its reach, the flexibility to organize my work and the healthy work-life balance made possible by the hybrid nature of the role. I was also attracted by the chance to work as part of an international team, while staying closely connected to the Italian legal community I know well. Thomson Reuters strong global reputation was another important factor in my decision.

The transition from private practice to Thomson Reuters allowed me to leverage my legal expertise in a completely different way. Instead of advising individual clients, I now help shape resources that support thousands of legal professionals globally.

How would you describe your daily role as a Senior Specialist Legal Editor (SSLE)?

A typical day as an SSLE is a mix of writing new content, reviewing contributed materials, second-reading colleagues’ work, updating existing resources, and collaborating with colleagues on shared topics and projects. The priorities can shift throughout the year, and sometimes from week to week depending on customer and product needs. What I enjoy most is that balance between focused editorial work and collaboration with colleagues.

This dynamic nature keeps the role engaging and ensures that our content remains responsive to the evolving needs of legal professionals. No two days are exactly alike, which reflects the fast-paced nature of both the legal industry and the AI technology space we operate in.

How is the Senior Specialist Legal Editor role evolving with AI and legal technology?

The SSLE role is evolving alongside the wider transformation of the legal sector, and AI is a key part of that change. At Thomson Reuters, we are encouraged to play an active role in this transformation, including by using AI tools in a safe and thoughtful way to improve efficiency in our work and sharing what we learn with the wider team.

Our legal expertise is instrumental to developing and training our AI-powered products. It is very much a collective effort, and one of the most interesting aspects of the role today is the opportunity to contribute directly to how legal expertise is delivered through new technologies.

This represents the future of legal content creation, where human expertise and AI capabilities work together to deliver unprecedented value to our customers. We’re not just adapting to AI; we’re actively shaping how it serves the legal profession.

Why is now an exciting time to join the Practical Law team?

We’re growing our Practical Law content in France and Germany and that creates real opportunity. This is a chance to join at a moment of expansion, shape the direction of our content, and have a visible strategic impact as the business scales into these jurisdictions.

How does your work as a legal editor help customers?

As a legal editor, you help lawyers do their jobs better every day. Your work turns complex law into practical, trusted and maintained content that informs and saves busy professionals time and therefore supports confident decision making.

What excites you most about the future of legal content and legal research?

Legal work is changing, and so is how lawyers access answers. Being part of a team that combines deep legal expertise with AI and innovative research tools and helps set the standard for the future, is challenging and exciting at the same time.
