How Thomson Reuters is Shaping the Future of Work Through Human-AI Partnership
Carissa Schmitz, Vice President, Talent
The world of work is rapidly evolving, driven by the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). At Thomson Reuters, we don’t just see AI as a tool for efficiency; we see it as a catalyst for unprecedented human creativity and innovation. It’s about amplifying our uniquely human capabilities – our imagination and our capacity for complex problem-solving.
What makes our perspective unique is our focus on empowering every colleague to harness AI as their innovation partner. We’re using AI to automate routine workflows, but more importantly, we’re creating opportunities for our people to experiment, learn, and discover how AI can amplify their individual strengths and capabilities. We’re actively building the foundation for our colleagues to shape their own human-led and AI-powered future through hands-on experience and continuous learning. We provide secure access to cutting-edge AI tools and comprehensive training, emphasizing that adaptation is a continuous journey.
Open Arena: Fostering a Culture of Experimentation
Recognizing the need for hands-on experience, we launched Open Arena in 2023. This secure, internal “sandbox” provides all 27,000 Thomson Reuters employees with direct access to leading large language models. Open Arena isn’t just a platform, it’s a commitment to fostering a culture of experimentation, allowing every teammate to explore AI’s potential in their daily work. Currently, 79% of Thomson Reuters colleagues globally are actively using AI tools.
Furthermore, Open Arena was instrumental in facilitating our groundbreaking AI Champions program. We’ve identified and empowered some 400 Thomson Reuters employees as AI super-users. These champions are not only deeply knowledgeable in AI, but they are also actively coaching their peers and designing practical use cases, demonstrating how AI can dramatically enhance efficiency and creativity across our business. Our AI Champions are invaluable mentors, helping colleagues navigate and apply this transformative technology.
Global Learning Day: Shaping Our AI-Powered Future Together
This concept of AI-human partnership was at the heart of our recent Global Learning Day, where over 8,500 teammates came together to explore a compelling question: How can we use AI not only as a tool for efficiency, but as a true innovation partner that amplifies our uniquely human capabilities?
Our goal was to continue to shift perspective on how AI can help to support different ways of thinking and be a tool for innovation. Key themes that emerged during these live sessions included:
- An AI future isn’t pre-determined, we are actively shaping it with our choices and actions
- Upskilling is essential to remain relevant in today’s fast-changing environment – combining technology + talent is how we can innovate to win
- Active engagement, curiosity, and adaptability is critical
As one teammate shared after Global Learning Day, “I liked the shift of conversation – thinking about the person before the technology.”
Join the Future of Work
As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of work, one thing is clear: the future is being shaped by the powerful partnership between humans and AI. At Thomson Reuters, we’re not just harnessing the potential of AI – we’re unlocking the full creative capacity of our people. By combining the best of human ingenuity with the capabilities of AI, we’re redefining what’s possible and creating a brighter future for our organization and the world of work.
