Meet the 2023 Carla Jones Social Impact Award Winner: Global Volunteer Network – Mexico City

Kellie Wellmann, Senior Director, Social Impact Institute

We are thrilled to announce that our Global Volunteer Network (GVN) team in Mexico City is the winner of our 4th annual Carla Jones Social Impact Award, one of the highest honors our Thomson Reuters colleagues can achieve. This award recognizes those who demonstrate extraordinary social impact in line with our values at Thomson Reuters.

Earlier this year the GVN leads – Carlos Montero, Sofía Betanzos and Mariel Tavares – organized a two-day volunteer event with Construyendo to build a home for a family in need. Dedicated volunteers from the office gathered in Temoaya, a small town in Mexico, to start this project. Each volunteer was guided by specialists and technicians to help construct the house. The team is eager to continue working with Construyendo, aiming to make a more significant impact in the community. They hope to have the opportunity next year to build a schoolroom in a community near Mexico City.

“The heartwarming act of building a house for those families was incredible. It’s something that truly moves me to tears. In just two days, we managed to change their lives, creating a turning point for them and instilling a sense of hope for a better life in a family that was in great need. Moreover, this activity has transformed the perspective of our volunteers, fostering a spirit of collaboration. It shows that through concrete actions, we can change the trajectory of our community and work toward building a better community by prioritizing the common good.” – Carlos Montero

Carla Jones, the namesake of this award, was a remarkable colleague at Thomson Reuters who lived our values and inspired others to do the same. Prior to her passing in 2019, Carla served as chief of staff to our previous three CEOs and was known for her grace, humility, and generosity. She was a mentor to many and a constant champion for diversity.

Carla founded the Social Impact Institute to better engage and amplify the work of our stakeholders and to highlight the positive impact Thomson Reuters has in the world. The Carla Jones Social Impact Award was created based on her passion for social issues and making a positive impact in our communities.

A $10,000 USD donation will be made to Construyendo. Congratulations, Carlos, Sofía, and Mariel. Carla’s memory lives on in your selfless action.
