How the Social Impact Sprint brings pro bono talent and nonprofits together

Natalia Gresenberg, Program Manager, Social Impact Institute

What can a group of skilled professionals accomplish for a nonprofit in just five hours? More than most people would expect.

Since its launch in 2021 by the Thomson Reuters Social Impact Institute, the Social Impact Sprint has grown into an annual global hackathon that connects Thomson Reuters employees with nonprofit organizations to drive meaningful social impact.

The Sprint is built around focused, high-impact pro bono projects. Thomson Reuters partners with nonprofits to identify specific strategic or capacity-building challenges, then brings together teams of employees with the right expertise to help address it. These pro bono consultants represent a wide range of disciplines, including marketing, branding, product development, technology, and HR.

Working side by side in a fun, fast-paced environment, employees and nonprofit partners collaborate to develop practical solutions. During a dynamic five-hour virtual session, nonprofit organizations receive hands-on support and leave with tangible deliverables, actionable insights, new connections, and an average of $8,000 in consulting value, all at no cost.

Over the past five years, 450 pro bono consultants have volunteered more than 4,800 hours to support 180 nonprofit organizations around the world, delivering more than $1 million in pro bono consulting value.

The Social Impact Sprint delivers impact on multiple levels: it gives Thomson Reuters employees meaningful opportunities to grow as leaders and build new skills, while helping nonprofit partners strengthen their organizations and advance their missions.

Hear directly from past participants about what makes the program so valuable.

“Participating in these Sprints and using my marketing skills from a pro bono perspective to help nonprofits has really been one of the most rewarding experiences in my entire 23 years that I’ve spent at Thomson Reuters.” – Ben, Pro Bono Consultant, United States

“In a world of givers and takers, Thomson Reuters is a hands-down giver. The Social Impact Sprint draws on the company’s greatest asset: highly competent, innovative, and empathetic employees. The Social Impact Sprint is a testament to the power of collective action in driving meaningful change.” – Robin, Nonprofit Participant, United States

“I absolutely loved being a part of this initiative. I wanted to participate because of one of our corporate values: Act fast, learn fast. I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and it was a wonderful experience. It was amazing working with my team.” – Linda, Pro Bono Consultant, United States

“I think that it’s amazing what you can do in a day when you put your heads to it, when you get a group of really engaged people, smart people in the room, and everybody pulls their weight. It’s incredible what you can come out with at the end of just a few hours.” – Shirley, Nonprofit Participant, Canada

Working with such talented, purpose-driven people to support an incredible nonprofit is something I’ll carry with me forever. Truly one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career.” – Mariana, Pro Bono Consultant, Mexico

The 2026 Sprint

That kind of impact doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people show up with their skills, their time, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. This year, virtual and in-person Sprint events will take place around the world from April 27 to May 1, 2026, with more than 40 nonprofit partners taking part. The Social Impact Sprint is a reminder that some of the most powerful change doesn’t require years or large budgets; sometimes it just takes the right people in a room, and a few focused hours to make it count.
