Work from Anywhere: Trying out a new benefit
Jacob, Sr Employer Branding Specialist
I started #WorkingAtTR in March 2022 on the Employer Branding team. One of the first things that caught my attention was how leaders facilitate and advance culture. I believe an organization’s culture is only as strong as its leaders. At Thomson Reuters, I’ve found that leaders at every level of the organization model inclusive mindsets and behaviors, support personal and professional goals, and encourage employees to take advantage of the wide range of perks and benefits.
One benefit that I recently used is the Thomson Reuters Work from Anywhere policy. This benefit allows employees to work remotely from anywhere in their home country for up to eight weeks a year. However, this policy just got even better! Beginning July 1, employees can work up to four weeks of their eight-week annual allowance outside their country of employment.
I was hesitant when I approached my manager to ask about using this benefit. In my experience, even though an organization offers a perk or benefit, there is no guarantee that you will have seamless access to it. However, at Thomson Reuters, this is not the case. My manager was delighted that I wanted to try out the Work from Anywhere policy. She quashed all my doubts about trying out the benefit and adjusting my typical work routine.
I traveled across Canada, flying from Ottawa to Calgary, to spend the week with friends. Moving from Eastern to Mountain time, my manager encouraged me to adjust my working hours for the week, ensuring I had the flexibility to enjoy my time away from work while in Calgary. Some of the highlights of my trip included hiking at Lake Louise, visiting the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, swimming in the Banff Upper Hot Springs, and attending the world-famous Calgary Stampede.
I’m fortunate that Thomson Reuters prioritizes employee well-being and work-life balance by offering perks like Work from Anywhere. I’m also thankful to have leaders that encourage me to use these benefits and provide me with the flexibility to ensure that work fits into my life.
